Stephan
Stephan is a hummus machine which was developed in Germany in the 1950s. Capable of grinding, heating, and processing any type of food, Stephan was brought to Jerusalem and replaced the tedious process of producing hummus by hand. He therefore marked an end to family-run hummus-making across generations.
I set out on a quest to find Stephan, which is supposed to be found in every single hummus restaurant in Jerusalem — but turned out to be a surprisingly rare sight. Over time, Stephan turned into an elusive object of desire, never fully revealed and instead undergoing several transformations throughout the film. Sometimes, Stephan appears as the machine it was designed to be, while at other times, shapeshifts into a previous relationship and other ghosts of my own past.
